from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery Reichelsheim is a cemetery in the community of Reichelsheim in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection . The Jewish cemetery is located immediately north of the village, not far from the comprehensive school, the sports field and the athletes' home on the “An der Ruh” street.

Until 1857, the dead of the Jewish community were buried in the Michelstadt cemetery. The 2516 m² cemetery, which is the largest in the district after the Michelstadt and Beerfelden cemeteries , was opened in 1857. In 1875 and 1930 it was expanded. The old part is bounded at the front by a quarry stone wall, in the rear part the cemetery is enclosed by a box hedge. There is no information about the number of tombstones . The last burial took place in 1940.

In 1931 the cemetery, where the deceased from the communities of Fränkisch-Crumbach and Pfaffen-Beerfurth were buried, was desecrated twice : in July six stones were knocked over and sometimes severely violated, in August around ten gravestones were knocked over and damaged.

In November 1931, a memorial for the Jewish soldiers at the front was inaugurated in the cemetery .
