history
In 1711 the Jews in Meckenheim were given the right to use church land from Pastor Konrad Hochhausen in order to create a Jewish cemetery . This controversial contract was also extended by his successors and in the second half of the 19th century the cemetery became the property of the Jewish community . In 1905 the burial place was expanded.
The Jewish cemetery was occupied from the 18th century until 1939. He is one of the oldest in the Rhein-Sieg district. 53 tombstones ( mazewot ) are still present in the 2079 m² cemetery , the oldest of which dates from 1775. The inscription was removed from 23 of the 53 tombstones.
time of the nationalsocialism
On November 24, 1939, the Meckenheim Jewish community had to transfer ownership of the cemetery to the city of Meckenheim free of charge. The city undertook to look after the cemetery and not to make any changes during the statutory idle time. The city did not stick to the agreements and in 1942 sold the tombstones to the marble and granite works in Bad Godesberg. In 1945 the cemetery was devastated and only a few tombstones were completely intact.
Commemoration
After 1945, a memorial stone was placed on the Jewish cemetery with the following inscription: “Friedhof der Juedischen Gemeinde Meckenheim. In memory of our dead from the period 1933–1945. "
