The Rheinbach Jewish Cemetery is located in Rheinbach , a town in the Rhein-Sieg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is located on the former Ladestraße (near the train station), which was renamed Am Jewish Friedhof .

history

Jews have been found in Rheinbach since the middle of the 14th century. The size of the congregation was 26 in 1813, 96 in 1885 and 27 in 1933. A synagogue is mentioned as early as 1843. The newly built synagogue was inaugurated in 1872 and destroyed by arson during the Reichspogromnacht in November 1938.

The cemetery that still exists today was laid out before 1893. There was previously a Jewish cemetery in Weiherstrasse, which was closed before 1900 and removed when Weiherstrasse was expanded. The new cemetery has an area of 778 . Today there are still 10 tombstones ( Mazewot ) or fragments of tombstones. The cemetery was occupied from 1893 to the early 1930s.

When the Jewish cemetery in Wormersdorf was closed in 1895 , the Wormersdorfer Jews buried their dead in Rheinbach. The Jewish residents of Oberdrees did the same until 1905 and those of Flerzheim until 1925 .

During the Nazi era , the cemetery was almost completely destroyed and most of the tombstones were taken away for reuse.

The cemetery has been a listed building since 1986 .
