Jewish cemetery (Ottweiler)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery in Ottweiler was the cemetery of the Jewish community in Ottweiler in the Saarland district of Neunkirchen . It is a listed building.

history

The dead of the Jewish community were initially buried in the Jewish cemetery in Illingen . By order of the then District Administrator Carl von Rohr , the local Jews had to bury their deceased in Ottweiler from 1842 and were given their own cemetery for this. At this time the number of Jews living in Ottweiler reached its highest level; an independent synagogue community was not constituted until 1896.

The last burial took place in 1935. The cemetery was devastated in 1938 and restored in 1945. Today around 80 tombstones are preserved. The oldest surviving grave in the cemetery dates from 1864.
