history

In 1777 the Jewish population in Neunkirchen was allowed their own cemetery. However, the site was not acquired and developed until 1831. The stone wall was built in 1870, the cemetery was expanded in 1880 and 1924. The cemetery was destroyed and desecrated during the November pogroms in 1938 . From 1942 it was misappropriated and occupied with Soviet prisoners of war and forced labor .

After 1945 the right of use was transferred to the Saar synagogue community, which had the cemetery restored. A memorial commemorates the dead during National Socialism and was inaugurated in June 1955. A memorial plaque for the Russian prisoners was also erected in the cemetery. Their graves were also restored and given a simple tombstone.

The cemetery has been desecrated ten times since 1971, the last time in September 2004. In this last vandalism, 19 grave sites were devastated.

There are only a few burials left today. In 2011, the contemporary witness and Holocaust survivor Alex Deutsch was buried in the cemetery.
