Jewish cemetery (Sötern)
The Jewish cemetery Sötern is a Jewish cemetery in the district of Sötern in the municipality of Nohfelden in the St. Wendel district ( Saarland ). It is a protected architectural monument .
The cemetery is located on the eastern edge of a wooded hill near the Tannenhof and Weiherhof Aussiedlerhöfe at the end of Weiherdammstrasse. 204 gravestones have been preserved on an area of 3708 m² .
history
It is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Saarland, which was laid out around 1650. It was a community cemetery for the Jewish communities of Sötern, Gonnesweiler and Bosen . The oldest tombstone dates from 1748. During the 19th century the cemetery was expanded three times. In 1938 - during the time of National Socialism - it was devastated. The last of a total of 500 to 600 burials took place in 1941. In 2008 the cemetery was desecrated and 60 tombstones were knocked over.
