history

The Jewish community of Reckendorf had buried their dead before 1798 in the Jewish cemetery in Ebern . The growing Jewish community of Reckendorf had been trying to establish its own Jewish cemetery for a long time . In 1798 the Jewish community was able to purchase a plot of land to build a cemetery for 300 guilders in the vineyards. The oldest gravestone ( Mazewa ) in the 25.10 ares large cemetery dates from 1798. The cemetery is oriented to the west and not, as usual, to the east. It was surrounded by a massive stone wall and there are many sandstone tombstones in the older part . Today 394 tombstones are still preserved.
