The Zeckendorf Jewish Cemetery in Zeckendorf, a district of Scheßlitz in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg , was built around 1617. The cemetery is located in a wooded area on a hill between Zeckendorf and Demmelsdorf . It is difficult to find for non-residents as there are no signs.

history

In 1617 Hans Mathes von Giech allowed the Demmelsdorf and Zeckendorfer Jews to create a cemetery. It was also occupied by the following surrounding Jewish communities: Burgellern , Burglesau , Scheßlitz and Stübig . Initially it was also used by the Jewish community in Bamberg until the Jewish cemetery in Walsdorf was established.

Today's 46.70 ares large cemetery was expanded in 1748. Today there are still about 598 tombstones ( Mazewot ) that were documented from 1991 to 1993. The oldest tombstone is from 1637.

The cemetery was desecrated several times during the National Socialist era .
