Life

After graduating from high school in Dortmund in 1974, he studied social sciences, psychology and philosophy at the Ruhr University Bochum , where he obtained his diploma in 1980. Then worked in the Collaborative Research Center 24 of the University of Mannheim (social science decision research) under the direction of Martin Irle . With this he received his doctorate in 1984. For the dissertation Cognitive Dissonance. An action theory perspective , he received the Young Scientists Prize (later Heinz Heckhausen Prize) of the German Society for Psychology (DGPs) at the congress of the German Society for Psychology in Vienna that same year .

1984–1990 Beckmann was project manager at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich under the director Heinz Heckhausen and involved in the development of the Rubicon model of the action phases . In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the University of Mannheim with "venia legendi for psychology" .

From 1990 to 1995 he was a Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation . From 1997 to 2006 Beckmann was professor for sports psychology at the University of Potsdam . In 2018 he was appointed Honorary Professor in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Queensland, Australia.

In Beckmann's work, sport psychological research is combined with scientifically founded practice. A central concern is the systematisation and professionalization of sport psychology. In this context he created a spatial-temporal structural model of sport psychological practice in competitive sport (published in Beckmann & Elbe, 2008). In 2003, on the basis of the GOP , he drafted the first fee schedule for sports psychology (GOSP), which is now commonly used as the basis for rewarding sports psychology.
