career

Defender Jürgen Janz, who came from SG Gau-Algesheim in 1910, played from 1970 to 1974 for 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the then second-class Regionalliga Südwest . He came on August 23, 1970 in the 6-0 home win against SV Alsenborn under coach Erich Gehbauer in the 5-0 score as a substitute for right winger Hans-Joachim "Jockel" Jakobi to his regional league debut. At the end of the round, he had played 25 league games and scored five goals, although he was only a substitute at the beginning. Mainz 05 took seventh place. In the first year as coach of Bernd Hoss , 1971/72, he was a reservist for a long time before he became a regular player in the defensive midfield in the closing stages of the season, mostly guarding the opposing playmaker and playing 18 league games. He kept his back free for the playmaker duo Paul Göppl and Gerd Schmidt and the 05er took fourth place. In his third season with the Red-Whites, 1972/73, he was a left defender under coach Hoss and with the legendary "54-goal storm" with right wing Renner, center forward Klier and left wing Kipp the championship in the southwest before the equal points competitor from Völklingen and thus the entry into the Bundesliga promotion round. Janz and his teammates Wolfgang Kneib , Herbert Scheller , Willi Löhr , Torben Nielsen , Herbert Renner , Göppl, Schmidt, Gerd Klier and Manfred Kipp confirmed their competitiveness, but SC Fortuna Köln prevailed and rose to the Bundesliga. Janz had played with two goals in the championship round 29 and in the promotion round seven games. Between the first and second round, in the run-up to Christmas, he was on the Rheinhessen trip to East Asia, where two encounters against the Thai national team and a game in Hong Kong were held. The last year of the old second-rate regional league, 1973/74, Janz finished fifth with Mainz. He completed his last regional league game for Mainz on April 28, 1974 in a 3-2 away win against southwest Ludwigshafen. After a total of 97 regional league appearances with six goals, the fast and attentive defender joined SV Röchling Völklingen at the start of the 2nd Bundesliga in 1974/75.

The debut year in the 2nd Bundesliga did not go as planned for the Saarlanders under the former Braunschweig master coach Helmuth Johannsen . Janz fought with his new teammates Jürgen Stars , Gilbert Dussier and Gerd Warken to stay in the league. This was achieved with the 13th place. In his second year in Völklingen, 1975/76, Janz made 37 appearances (1 goal) under the new coach Herbert Binkert and team-mate Karl-Heinz Granitza made the breakthrough as a top scorer with 29 goals. The last game in the 2nd Bundesliga was played by Janz on May 21, 1977 in a 4-1 defeat at KSV Baunatal. In the DFB Cup he made 15 appearances and one goal for various clubs. From July 1, 1977 he was under contract with Hassia Bingen for two years before he returned to Mainz in the summer of 1980.

The returnees celebrated the first two years - mostly as a stopover - with Mainz in the 1980/81 championship and the 1982 runner-up in the amateur league southwest . The two years were crowned by the 3-0 victory on June 17, 1982 in the final of the German amateur championship against the amateurs from Werder Bremen. In the master team of coach Herbert Dörenberg , Janz played in front of 8,000 spectators at the Bruchweg Stadium on the side of the goalscorers Charly Mähn (2) and Ludwig Scherhag (1), as well as Herbert Scheller and Gerhard Bopp . In the 1983/84 season he was no longer used and joined the SG 03 Harxheim for the 1984/85 season.

He ended his career in 1988 after four years of playing at SG 03 Harxheim.
