Jürgen Schmädeke

Jürgen Schmädeke (born March 1, 1937 in Bremen ; † February 7, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German historian .

Life

Jürgen Schmädeke studied history and German. In 1964 he received his doctorate with a thesis on military command and parliamentary democracy. On the problem of the responsibility of the Reichswehr Minister in the Weimar Republic at the Free University of Berlin for Dr. phil. From 1964 to 1966 he worked as an editor of the daily newspaper Der Kurier , from 1966 to 1978 of the Berliner Tagesspiegel . From 1978 to 1996 he was a research assistant at the Historical Commission in Berlin .

Schmädeke became known for his research volume on resistance against National Socialism, which he published together with Peter Steinbach , and for his publications on the Reichstag fire . He turned against the thesis that Marinus van der Lubbe was the sole perpetrator of the Reichstag fire in 1933 and, in the Historisches Zeitschrift (HZ), took the view that new documents that had been available since the political turning point in 1989/1990 also spoke in favor of one induced by the Nazi leadership Perpetration.

Jürgen Schmädeke was a reviewer for the HZ for several decades, right up to the end .
