Jürgen Spieß (born March 26, 1984 in Heidelberg ) is a German weightlifter in the class up to 105 kg. In 2009 he was European champion in duels and jerks in the class up to 94 kg.

Life

In 1995 at the age of eleven, Spieß started weightlifting at the SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim . Currently (as of the 2016/2017 season) the sports soldier is lifting in the 1st Bundesliga for the AV 03 Speyer and starts at individual championships for the AV 03 Speyer. He is a member of the sports promotion group Bruchsal and is trained by national trainer Frank Mantek at the national performance center in Leimen.

In 2003 Spieß became German champion for the first time. The following year he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships. In 2007 he was named Weightlifter of the Year. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , he came in ninth.

Jürgen Spieß celebrated his greatest success so far in the class up to 94 kg at the European Championships in Bucharest in 2009, when he became European champion in duels and pushing and vice European champion in snatch with three new personal bests. Spieß canceled his participation in the 2009 World Championships in Goyang at the end of the preparation because an old back injury made itself felt again. At the end of the season, he was voted Weightlifter of the Year for the second time.

At the 2010 World Championships in Antalya (TUR), Jürgen Spieß (up to 94 kg) reached only 22nd place with a duel of 357 kg (tearing 162 kg + pushing 195 kg). In 2011 he changed the weight class from "-94 kg" to "-105 kg" (heavyweight) in order to have better chances in international comparison. At the European Championships 2011 in Kazan (RUS) Jürgen Spieß (up to 105 kg) achieved eleventh place with a duel of 370 kg (tearing 170 kg + pushing 200 kg). For the participation in the World Championships 2011 in Paris (FRA) he was nominated by the national coach Frank Mantek after the German Championships 2011 in Forst and should lead the national team in France. However, a persistent thigh injury forced him to cancel his World Cup participation.

As part of the Black Forest Cup on June 9, 2012 in Heidelberg, Spieß qualified for the Olympic Games in London and thus received his second Olympic participation. As in Beijing, he was ninth again.

At the German championship in 2014 in Obrigheim (Baden) he became German champion for the 10th time with a duel of 380 kg (175 km tearing / 205 pushing) and thereby bought his ticket for the world championship in mid-November 2014 in Almaty / Kazakhstan.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished second in Group B (overall: 10th) with a duel of 390 kg (170 kg tearing / 220 kg pushing).
