Jürgen Welp (born December 27, 1959 in Hamm ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper .
Career
Welp won the championship title in the Oberliga Westfalen with SC Eintracht Hamm in the 1982/83 season . He played his first game in a professional league in the 1986/87 season . For Rot-Weiss Essen he played in the 2nd Bundesliga on the 38th and final matchday against the Stuttgarter Kickers . The game ended 3-0 for the Kickers. He later played for FC Gütersloh before becoming a substitute goalkeeper at FC Schalke 04 . In the 1990/91 season he was number two behind Jens Lehmann . On the 16th matchday Lehmann injured himself in the game against FSV Mainz 05 , so Welp came to his premiere for Schalke. In total, he played five games in which there was no defeat. At the end of the season, 1st place was on the books and Welp was promoted to the Bundesliga with Schalke . There he again represented Lehmann and kept his box clean during the game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , so the game ended goalless 0-0. Welp then moved to SpVg Beckum , with whom he won the Westphalia Cup in 1995 . He crowned the title win in the final against SpVgg Erkenschwick , when he was able to save two penalties in the penalty shoot-out after no goals were scored in regular time and the subsequent extra time . The Beckum team were qualified for the DFB Cup and played against 1. FC Köln in the first main round . After 120 minutes of goalless play, it was again Jürgen Welp who parried against Bruno Labbadia on penalties and brought his team into the second round.
