J. Christopher Burch

J. Christopher Burch (born March 28, 1953 in Wayne , Pennsylvania ) is an American entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of Burch Creative Capital, a New York- based company that manages venture capital investments and branding. Also is the co-founder of Tory Burch LLC. Burch became a billionaire in 2012 through his stake in the fashion company C. Wonder. In addition to his personal investments, he was an investor with the financial firm Guggenheim Partners LLC.

Life

Burch was born into a middle-class family in Wayne, Pennsylvania . His mother, Robin Sinkler, was a member of the Episcopal Church and was from Philadelphia . His father, John Walter Burch, a Catholic (Roman Catholic), was one of ten children of a middle-class Baltimore family . His father owned a supplier of mining equipment and supplies.

Career

Fashion industry

In 1976, when Burch was a student at Ithaca College, Burch and his brother Robert founded Eagle's Eye apparel with an investment of $ 2,000 . They bought sweaters for $ 10 each and sold them for $ 15. Burch decided to find a factory to produce a new type of "trendy" sweater that he could sell door to door on campus. After a short time he was also selling sweaters on other university campuses and eventually he made it into retail. Over the next decade, the company expanded, generating up to $ 140 million in sales with nationwide distribution, including 50 of its own stores. In 1989 the company was partially sold to the Swire Group . It was then sold in full in 1998, when the company was valued at $ 60 million.

In 2004, Burch helped his then-wife start the Tory Burch fashion label. He was C0-Chairman of the company, in which he owned 28.3%. He sold half of his shares in December 2012 when the company was valued at $ 3.5 billion. In 2008 he founded J. Christopher Capital LLC (later renamed Burch Creative Capital). The company was founded to develop its new brands and manage its investments. In 2011, he founded C. Wonder, a clothing, accessories and interior design business. In July 2015, C. Wonder was bought by Xcel Brands.

Real estate industry

In 2004, Burch, the architect Philippe Stark and the hotelier Alan Faena teamed up and founded the Faena Hotel + Universe in Buenos Aires . The investment in the building, which was built in 1902 as a grain silo facility, exceeded 100 million US dollars. In 2014 he reinvested in the property developer's projects after buying a condominium in the Faena House real estate project.

In 2005, Burch bought a luxury home in Southampton, New York for $ 14 million. Four months later, he sold it for $ 25 million after renovating the property. A year later, Burch founded JB Christopher, a supplier of building materials. In 2011, Burch and partner Austin Hearst completed a $ 19 million luxury home development in Nantucket , Massachusetts . In 2012 he bought a townhouse in the West Village for $ 11 million after renting it previously. He then carried out a renovation project that was not completed before the property came back on the market.

In 2013, Burch bought Nihiwatu Resort on Sumba Island , a 27-villa resort near Bali .

Other investments

In 1993, Burch was the producer of the romantic comedy Watch It, directed by Tom Flynn, which received a high rating from the New York Times . He was also one of the earliest investors in Internet Capital Group. He also made various investments in the telecommunications industry, e.g. B. in Aliph and Powermat. He was also an investor in the water company Voss (water) , and in the online office supplies company Poppin. In 2014, he invested $ 10 million in BaubleBar. That year he also teamed up with Ellen DeGeneres to launch her ED lifestyle collection.

Personal

In 1982, Burch married Susan Cole in an episcopal ceremony. They have three children together. In 1996 he married the designer Tory Robinson with whom he has three sons. Burch and Robinson divorced in 2007.

Burch served on the board of directors of the Rothman Institute Orthopedic Foundation. He was President of the Pierre Hotel Cooperative and on the boards of Guggenheim Partners and the Continuum Group. In 2013, Burch donated $ 1.3 million to his alma mater (Tilton School). From 1982 to 1985 he was on the Board of Trustees of the Tilton School.
