James E. Freeman (born February 2, 1946 in Brooklyn , New York - † August 9, 2014 in San Francisco , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

James E. Freeman graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in 1964. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was supposed to fight in the Vietnam War, but announced his homosexuality to his superiors at the age of 22, whereupon he was discharged from the Navy has been. In 1969 he was an eyewitness to the Stonewall uprising . In the early 1970s, Freeman turned to acting and studied at Shelton Studios near San Francisco.

After working as a theater actor for a few years, Freeman moved to Los Angeles in 1980 to establish himself as a film actor - which he succeeded in doing after a few years in tiny roles. He made his cinema debut as a tow driver in The Giant alongside Chuck Norris . The tall, dark-haired actor became known above all for the impersonation of intimidating, hard-boiled or even violent characters in supporting roles. The latter also applies to two of his most famous roles, which he played in 1990: In Wild at Heart by David Lynch , he was seen as the vicious mobster Marcello Santos ; in Miller's Crossing he played the brutal henchman Eddie Dane under the direction of Ethan and Joel Coen . 1997 he played in Alien - The rebirth of the ruthless scientist Dr. Mason Wren , who by Sigourney Weaver depicted Ellen Ripley want to clone. In addition to his acting career, Freeman was also active as a poet and published his works on the Internet. He retired from acting after nearly 70 film and television roles in the mid-2000s and spent the rest of his life in San Francisco. He has been HIV positive since the mid-1980s . Freeman died in August 2014 at the age of 68, but his death was not made public until three months later at his own request.
