J. Gerhard Lohse

J (acob) Gerhard Lohse (born January 10, 1851 in Fünfhausen , † January 2, 1941 in Oldenburg ) was a German-British astronomer .

After studying astronomy in Göttingen, Lohse went to Scotland in 1877, where he became second assistant at James Lindsay's observatory in Dunecht (first assistant was Ralph Copeland ). There he observed the Temple-Swift comet on November 8, 1880 . In 1884 he moved to the private observatory of James Wigglesworth in Scarborough ; where he was able to use the newly installed 15.5-inch reflector telescope from September 1, 1885.
In 1889 Wigglesworth died and the observatory was closed. Lohse went to Scotland again, this time as Copeland's first assistant at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh . He stayed there until the end of his active career, after which he returned to Germany.
