The I.Ae. 22 DL was a trainer aircraft made by the Argentine manufacturer Fábrica Militar de Aviones .
history
The I.Ae. 22 DL was the further development of the I.Ae. 21 DL , which itself was developed from the North American NA-16 , which was serving the Argentine military at the time. The Argentine experience with the NA-16 and the deterioration in political relations with the USA led to the in-house development of FMA I.Ae. 21 DL . The DL 21 had the same fuselage construction as the NA-16, which, however, turned out to be too difficult for series production, since not all materials were available due to the Second World War , which is why a completely new fuselage construction was necessary.
construction
The machine is a fabric-covered wooden structure, which was designed as a low-wing aircraft with retractable tail wheel landing gear and was powered by an I.Ae. 16 El Gaucho nine-cylinder radial engine with 340 kW was driven. Teachers and students sat one behind the other in a closed cockpit. The rear seat could be rotated so that a moving machine gun firing backwards could be operated from this seat. The prototype first flew on May 17, 1944 or August 8, 1944 (unfortunately the sources do not agree on this). Towards the end of series production, instead of the I.Ae. 16 El Gaucho engines imported Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah -25 engines of 350 kW were used, resulting in a slight increase in output. These models were given the designation I.Ae. 22C .
