History and construction

Due to the Second World War , Argentina was no longer able to acquire strategic materials from warring nations. For this reason, attempts were made to develop new aircraft using raw materials that were available in their own country. First of all, attention was paid to the North American NA-16, which was already in service in Argentina, and the I.Ae. 21 derive. The machine had the same fuselage structure as the NA-16 and revised wings. The aircraft was to be powered by an El Gaucho I.Ae.-17 star engine with 330 kW developed in Argentina , but since this was not available, a Wright R-975 Whirlwind star engine with 410 kW was used. Although the prototype performed satisfactorily, the fuselage structure ultimately turned out to be unsuitable for series production due to the lack of materials, so the FMA I.Ae. 22 to develop.
