The FMA IA 54 Carancho was a glider manufactured by the Argentine manufacturer Fábrica Argentina de Aviones .
history
At the end of the 1950s, Reimar Horten suggested theoretical studies on laminar flows in wings. To test the results of these studies, he developed a glider, the IA 49 , in 1960 , but it was not built. It was not until 1963 that the Argentine engineer Ricardo Emilio Olmed suggested using another experimental glider, which was easier to build than the model developed by Horten, that work on the IA 54 began. The machine was unofficially Andean condor or Condor V called.
construction
The aircraft essentially consisted of the fuselage of a two-seater Condor IV that had crashed earlier and the new wings with the laminar profile developed by Horton . The machine was made entirely of wood.
