The FMA I.Ae. 37 Ala Delta was a fighter aircraft project from the Argentine manufacturer Fábrica Militar de Aviones .
History and construction
After his previous flying wing projects were canceled in 1951, Reimar Horten began work on a twin-engine fighter in 1952. This was an aircraft that consisted of a delta wing with an integrated fuselage and at the top of which was a fully glazed cockpit for a lying pilot. In contrast to the flying wing aircraft developed by Horten , the I.Ae. 37 (sometimes incorrectly referred to as IA.37 Pulqui III ) via a tail unit. The air inlets for the two planned engines were located on the right and left of the cockpit at the wing roots. The aircraft also had a retractable nose wheel landing gear.
After extensive wind tunnel tests, the first prototype was developed under the name FMA I.Ae. 37 Planeador without drive tested from October 1, 1954 in a tow plow . Since the tow plows showed deficiencies in flight behavior and the lying position of the pilot ultimately turned out to be unsuitable for a high-speed aircraft, the machine was rebuilt until 1958. When the Rolls-Royce Derwent 5 jet engine was available, it was integrated into the machine, which again required extensive modifications. In 1961 the machine was to take off on its second maiden flight. In 1960 the project, which was the starting point for a whole family of aircraft, such as B. a subsonic training aircraft, or a Mach 2.2 fighter aircraft with two engines under the wings (referred to as IA.e. 48 ), should serve, but for reasons of economy , discontinued.
