J. Irving Whalley
John Irving Whalley (born September 14, 1902 in Barnesboro , Cambria County , Pennsylvania , † March 8, 1980 in Pompano Beach , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1960 and 1973 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Irving Whalley attended his home public schools and Cambria Rowe Business College . He then worked in the automotive, banking and coal industries. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Pittsburgh belonging Johnstown College and chairman of the Somerset County Redevelopment Authority and Windber Planning Commission . He was also a member of the Windber School Committee from 1935 to 1947 . Between 1951 and 1955 Whalley was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1955 to 1960 he was a member of the State Senate .
After the death of Representative Douglas Hemphill Elliott , Whalley was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 18th seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 8, 1960. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1973 . Since 1963 he represented the twelfth electoral district of his state there. During his time as a congressman, the Vietnam War and the final phase of the civil rights movement fell .
In 1972 Irving Whalley declined to run again. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died on March 8, 1980 in Pompano Beach.
