JJ Simmons III.

Joseph Jacob Simmons III. (born March 26, 1925 in Muskogee , Oklahoma ; died December 19, 2002 in Washington, DC ) was an American Democratic politician.

Life

J. J. Simmons grew up as the son of the African American oil entrepreneur JJ Simmons . His civil engineering degree was graduated from the University of Detroit in 1947 . He received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering geology from Saint Louis University in 1949 . He then worked for the family business Simmons Royalty Co. as a vice president and geologist until 1961 . Robert F. Kennedy got him a position in the Home Office in 1961 . There he was an assistant in the oil and gas department and later head of the oil import administration. In 1970 he became chief lobbyist for the Amerada Hess oil company . In 1982 he was appointed by Ronald Reagan to succeed Thomas A. Trantum on the Interstate Commerce Commission for a term ending December 31, 1985. He took his oath of office on April 27, 1982. On February 28, 1983, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Home Office under Secretary James G. Watt . While the minister fought against environmental activists, he led the ministry.

After the Minister's resignation, Simmons was reappointed to the ICC on September 10, 1984. His term of office was extended in 1985 and 1990. He was a member of the last governing body of the ICC and was one of the members of the new governing body of the Surface Transportation Board, which was created in 1996 . He retired in December 1996 after trade unions in particular persuaded President Bill Clinton not to nominate him again. He was succeeded by William Clyburn Jr. He then worked as a consultant for the transport company CSX Corporation .

J. J. Simmons was married with five children.
