JR (born February 22, 1983 in Paris ) is a French photographer and street artist.

Life and works

JR (Juste Ridicule) became known for his impressive photographs of residents of banlieues , which he had put up as large posters on skyscrapers and bridges in Paris and Cartagena . In the Spanish port city, where old buildings had been demolished to make way for more lucrative high-rise office buildings, JR posted large photo portraits of the oldest residents, some of whom were evicted from their apartments. In 2008, JR worked together with the graffiti artist Blu on the Cuvry graffiti in Berlin .

Another project is the film Women are Heroes , which was shown as a competition entry at the Cannes International Film Festival . An exhibition "JR - 'Women are Heroes'", which was shown in the Düsseldorf gallery Henrik Springmann until May 30, 2010, was also created from the image material. The women shown in these pictures have one thing in common: They live in the slums of the 21st century and they are strong. The photographs were taken on a journey through seven countries on three continents. The results have been shown in exhibitions around the world. The premiere was in October 2009 on the Île Saint-Louis island in Paris. Further stations were Cannes, then Los Angeles and Shanghai . In May 2017, JR presented the documentary Moments: Faces of a Journey (Visages Villages) at the Cannes Film Festival , which he shot together with Agnès Varda . The film received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Documentary in 2018.

JR takes photos with a Leica M9 with a Leica Summicron M 28 mm f / 2 ASPH lens.

He is the winner of the US $ 100,000 TED Prize 2011. In 2014 he received a large retrospective museum exhibition from the Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden. On the occasion, the street artist also posted posters all over the city.

In 2006, JR took part in the Red Bull sponsored Outsides project , an illegal corporate street art attack in Wuppertal . In his provocative project contribution , he photographed the people of Wuppertal and made them stars by hanging the portraits on giant posters, stickers and banners on the Wuppertal suspension railway .

In 2016, JR apparently made the glass pyramid in the inner courtyard of the Louvre disappear with a trompe-l'œil , and in 2019 apparently enlarged the glass pyramid downwards and placed it in a crater.

The Inside Out Project

The Inside Out project is one of the largest art projects in the world, in which personal identity flows into parts of the artistic work. The project is a collaboration between JR, the TED Prize and the participating passers-by. To do this, JR converted small trucks into mobile photo booths that can portray people on site for its 'Inside Out' project and print out the photos directly. The resulting posters / placards are then stuck to public buildings in order to transform them into total works of art.

Under the title “different faces - different views”, 674 Wuppertal residents were photographed within four days by the Inside Out Project team who had traveled from Paris using the so-called “photobooth” (photo truck) Printed out as a poster and attached to the outside facade of the old wine office on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße . The Wuppertal project was created against racism and for tolerance.

The Inside Out Project has produced 223927 portraits in 112 different countries worldwide. In addition to the Pantheon in Paris (4160 portraits), Times Square in New York (5806 portraits), on the Gaza Strip in Israel / Palestine (3275 portraits) and across northern Japan to Tokyo (24067 portraits), the historic Weinkontor was also opened in Wuppertal covered with the paste-ups.
