The Sehnde correctional facility is a closed facility of the State of Lower Saxony in Sehnde .

history

The cabinet of the Lower Saxony state government decided in November 1998 to build the Sehnde JVA in order to counter the overcrowding of the other Lower Saxony penal institutions. The foundation stone of the prison was laid on May 23, 2002, after the prison wall had already been built in December 2001. On June 3, 2002, the Sehnde prison was founded. The purpose of the association is to promote the relationship between the public, the inmates and the prison staff, as well as crime prevention. On November 25 of the same year, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated with the participation of the future prison staff . The interior work began in 2003.

On October 1, 2004, the Sehnde JVA was opened by Justice Minister Elisabeth Heister-Neumann at an inauguration ceremony . From October 29th to 30th, 2004, an overnight event for more than 200 people from Sehnde and the surrounding area, as well as invited guests from politics, law enforcement and media, took place in the prison under the motto Experience everyday prison life up close . On December 8, 2004, the first prisoners were admitted and on December 31, 2005 the prison had reached its occupancy. On January 1, 2006, the Bad Gandersheim social therapeutic institution became a department of the Sehnde correctional institution. In this department, up to 32 prisoners are treated on the basis of social therapeutic measures.

General

The Sehnde JVA is a four-storey corner crest building and is used to accommodate male adults with a prison term of three to eleven years. With a capacity of 534 prison places, of which 428 are for prisoners and 106 for prisoners on remand, it is one of the largest institutions in the country. It has five detention houses, which are divided into nine prison departments (29 wards) as well as a medical department in which mentally ill inmates can be accommodated as inpatients. The approximately 15.4 hectare area is surrounded by an electronically monitored fence and a 6.5 m high asylum wall. Of the approximately 280 employees in the prison, more than 260 work in enforcement and administrative services. The remainder are five social workers, three psychologists, three pastors, a psychiatrist, a general practitioner, a dentist and the four-person prison management team. The production costs of the prison amounted to 103.5 million euros.

assignment

In addition to the safe accommodation of the detainees, the prison concept includes above all a preparation for a successful reintegration of the detainees in a professional and personal life. According to Section 2 of the Prison Act, inmates in the Sehnde JVA are to be enabled to lead a life of social responsibility without punishment after their release. The employees are supposed to support the detainees to compensate for their personal deficits and to deal with their crimes.

Work and production

The prison has a modern and certified laundry (500 m²) with maintenance and delivery service, a 1,000 m² workshop for various metalworking, a 290 m² paint shop that also carries out powder coatings and a 1,700 m² carpentry shop. There are also eight business areas for entrepreneurs.

The JVA Sehnde also offers twelve occupational therapy places. Under the guidance of specially trained employees, for example, the simplest basic requirements such as punctuality and reliability are trained as well as the handling of a wide variety of tools and materials. In adapted but steadily increasing levels of difficulty, the occupational therapy participants master increasingly demanding work in the areas of woodworking and ceramics. Upon completion of the measure, the participant should be able to take on a full-time job in the other businesses (e.g. carpentry) of the prison.
