Jack Hazan (born March 31, 1939 in Manchester ) is a British film director and cameraman .

Life

Jack Hazan was born in Manchester in 1939 to Syrian immigrants and lived in the United Kingdom . In the late 1950s he moved to California to study film at the University of California, Los Angeles . He then returned to his British homeland in the early 1960s. Here Hazan initially worked as a camera assistant for the film department of the BBC . He then worked as a cameraman for television documentaries. From 1969 he made several short films as a director, including Grant North about the landscape painter and sculptor Keith Grant and The Films of Robert Bolt about the playwright Robert Bolt . In 1970 he shot appearances as a cameraman for musicians Jimi Hendrix and The Doors at the Isle of Wight Festival . In the same year Hazan convinced the British painter David Hockney to make a documentary about him and his friends. Here Hazan mixed documentary with fictional elements. The shooting of the film lasted intermittently until 1973. At the Locarno Festival , the film, entitled A Bigger Splash, received a second prize from the international jury in 1974. In order to finance his other projects, Hazan worked repeatedly in the 1970s as a cameraman for the information program World in Action on the television channel ITV Granada . At the end of the decade, he and David Mingay directed the semi-documentary concert film Rude Boy about the punk band The Clash . Hazan also worked as a cameraman and filmed the band's stage performances with a hand-held camera during their 1978 concert tour Give 'Em Enough Rope . The film ran in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1980 . After he had made commercials in the United States in the meantime, he filmed various video clips for the British band Dexys Midnight Runners in 1985 . In 1998 he directed the film Comic Act , in which he portrayed the London stand-up comedy scene.
