Franziska Güttler

Franziska Guettler (* 1978 in Dresden ) is a German painter and graphic artist . She lives and works in Leipzig.

life and work

After studying painting and graphics at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HGB) from 1998 to 2000, she graduated from the HGB with Volker Pfüller in 2004. In 2008 she became a master class student with Ralf Kerbach at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK).

While her earlier imagery was partly based on myths and fairy tales, Franziska Guettler gradually founded her own mythologies . She subsumes a whole cosmos of images and thoughts under the term “Nor”. Regarding the terminology and aesthetics of her invention, she says: “Nor like black and like north, so dark and cold, but also big and wide and wonderful.” And a wide field of stories, associations and profound considerations opens up. From a technical point of view, the open form of lithography , to which she has devoted herself intensively since 2014, is of particular importance to Guettler . By hand coloring your prints become unique.

And suddenly they flash. Peter Doig's calm scenes as great aesthetic and content inspiration, Marc Chagall and Daniel Richter of course. The tart color surfaces with their sharp contours evoke the Brücke artist and Edvard Munch in their wild, unpredictable simplification . At Guettler, traditional painting traditions are mixed with high-tech: Her flamenco pictures, which have been created since 2013, are based on video stills recorded with a mobile phone camera. Guettler then paints them in the classic way in oil on canvas. The gray, pale, strongly subdued colors in combination with the imperfect shape, fluttering fabrics and swirling figures are so delicate and translucent that any thought of pathos and kitsch evaporates instantly. Occasionally pastose-abstract passages develop in which she savored the color in its materiality and celebrated passionately.
