The central theme of the early works are growing people and their emotional world. Otto lets her protagonists, mostly young girls, perform enigmatic acts. Otto takes a neutral observer position and confronts the observer with the process of growing up. It creates a strong liveliness through soft merging light and shadow zones, interrupted by bright color accents. This creates body landscapes that give their figures a strong authenticity.

In the more recent paintings, Justine Otto relates figuration and abstraction to one another. Her hero images work on the history of painting, as well as on the male myths of humanity. The broken figures hold their position, but their uniforms, riding horses and other status symbols are permeable and dysfunctional.
