education

Mandy Kunze studied from 2005 to 2009 in the specialist class for painting and graphics with Neo Rauch, at the University of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig . In 2006 she was an Erasmus student at NCAD Dublin . In 2008 she was a Leonardo Fellow in Paris. In 2010 she successfully passed her diploma examination in the field of fine arts: painting and graphics under Neo Rauch at the University of Graphics and Book Art Leipzig. From 2010 to 2011 she was a guest student in Neo Rauch's master class for painting and from 2012 to 2014 she was a master student of his master class.

Artistic work

Kunze mainly paints representationally. The main aspects of her work include the atmosphere of the Leipzig Wilhelminian style and industrial architecture and landscapes. Animals and animal representations play a large role in their life and work. In addition to exotic animals, the Leipzig alluvial forest with its specific flora and fauna is at the center of her paintings. Thematically, her works move in the field of tension between indoor and outdoor space. Kunze describes this as regional visual research in Saxony, which she continuously deepens and expands. The artistic focus is on interiors, the newly created lake landscapes and parks in the area. For a long time, Kunze focused on studying her own work environment. In this process a whole series of varied studio pictures was created. Kunze's painting tends increasingly towards abstraction. Objective things become more difficult to grasp, the picture themes literally dissolve. Since 2017 she has been concentrating on the themes of sea, water, waves and, associated with this, on the colors blue and turquoise in nuanced shades. The monumental painting Welle / Wave from 2017, composed of several parts and with the format of 345 × 465 cm, is a current highlight. Your pictures develop a strong visual life of their own and speak for themselves. The writer Clemens Meyer , among others, refers to this when he notes about Mandy Kunze's painting:

“Bury the words. Photos!"

In 2014 and 2016, Kunze participated in two exhibitions in Abu Dhabi, one in New York and in 2015 a four-week work grant in Tel Aviv. The ambivalence of distance and home is a central theme of her work, which connects with the others in various places.

She sees the picture Tao (2014), in which Far Eastern and regional elements meet, as a symbol of her path of development . Abu Dhabi inspired her to devote herself to the desert and the Arabian tradition of falconry. The idea of hunting has something meditative about it. The process of mindfulness is crucial here. The group exhibition Formation 7 at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts in 2017 also related to the topic of hunting .

The connection between two cultures and landscapes is characteristic of her painting, with which she tries to lift the veil of habit.

reception

Neo Rauch wrote in 2010: "Over the years, Mandy Kunze has been pushing her painterly program with great vigor. From an early age, she has met the panel painting as a place of revelation of artistic coincidences with the appropriate respect and courage that is necessary to achieve achievements in this field Expanding positions and finally overcoming them. " He particularly emphasizes its "almost combative intensity", "with which it forces the color matter into its transformations. Thus it maintains the evolutionary deep tension in the work and at the same time leaves the viewer curious (...)".

The art historian Sara Tröster Klemm assesses Kunze's works as follows:

“Mandy Kunze (...) orients her pictorial subjects to the great masters of classical modernism, Claude Monet , Vincent van Gogh , Pablo Picasso - that is obvious when you look at her interiors and landscapes. With their accentuated central perspective, their pictures develop a suction that involuntarily draws the viewer into the picture. At the same time, Mandy Kunze has developed a very unique visual language, which is most evident in her characteristic brushstroke . She places individual lines and individual colors next to one another in extremely contrasting fashion. The brushstrokes stand for themselves, individually, they are strong and self-confident, almost independent, as if they led a life of their own - and yet they have to function in the picture as a whole. This leads to an intense tension in her pictures, on the one hand they appear rough, bulky, with a strong perspective and on the other hand they have a harmonious motif. With her "virtuoso mastery of color, Kunze succeeds in modeling the finest moods. She shows us tropical hot nights under palm trees, Arabian landscapes and quiet central European evening scenes. She shows us home and distance at the same time."

Kunze prefers a traditional way of working, which she also passes on to her students in the course of her teaching at the HGB Leipzig evening academy :

“I really enjoy working on site and without any photo templates. Sometimes I go out into nature with a drawing pad, sometimes with large canvases. When working on site, with the easel in the open air, I always try to approach the moment of inspiration. It is a free artistic work, and for me it is about more than “transferring” a scene en plein-air documentary: The locations serve as a source of inspiration and should also be recognizable in the change of seasons, colors, moods and different weather conditions - the painting process always has the upper hand. "

On Museum.de Kunze is described as "one of the most interesting representatives of the Leipzig School of Painting".
