Jack Herer (born June 18, 1939 in New York City , † April 15, 2010 in Eugene , Oregon ) was an American writer and hemp activist . His best-known work is the book The rediscovery of the useful plant hemp , which is now a standard work for hemp farmers and advocates of legalization .

Life

Jack Herer trained as an interpreter in the army after high school . He was the father of five children from his first three marriages. On September 9, 1999, Herer married for the fourth time. He ran twice in the US presidential election as a candidate for the Grassroots Party , a small party that advocated liberal drug policy. In 1988 and 1992 he won less than 0.1 percent of the vote. The first attempt he received in 1949 votes, four years later, at least 3875.

He was given a special honor when a cannabis variety ( strain Jack Herer ) was named after him. In July 2000 Herer suffered a heart attack and a stroke, which meant that he could only move the right side of his body with difficulty. According to his own statement, however, he had largely recovered since May 2004, which he attributed to his consumption of fly agaric and cannabis. At the end of 2007 he was working on a book about religion and mushrooms and led a signature campaign that advocated the legalization of cannabis in the USA, among other things. Furthermore, Herer was involved in many charitable projects.
