Jack Hirsh

Jack Hirsh (born January 7, 1935 in Łódź , Poland or January 5, 1935 in Melbourne , Australia ) is a Canadian medical doctor and hemostaseologist (blood coagulation researcher) and professor emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton , Ontario .

Life

Hirsh came to Melbourne , Australia in 1936 . (According to other sources, he was born there.) He earned an MBBS ( Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery ) and an MD (Professional Doctorate) in medicine from the University of Melbourne . He then received further training at Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri , the London Postgraduate Medical School ( University of London , United Kingdom ) and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Hirsh went to McMaster University in Hamilton in 1973 , where he became founding director of the Hamilton Civic Hospital Research Center in 1988 . In addition to his professorship, he was temporarily head of internal medicine at McMaster University. Hirsh was also a partner and head of research at Vascular Therapeutics Inc. and other pharmaceutical companies. Most recently he was director of the Henderson Research Center at McMaster University, renamed the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI) in 2010 .

Act

Hirsch carried out translational research and was one of the leading figures in thrombosis research. On the one hand, he contributed to the development of the low molecular weight heparins , on the other hand, he carried out the clinical studies to prove their effectiveness in deep vein thrombosis. Further merits lie in the improvement of the coagulation tests for the control of oral anticoagulation - his work contributed to the introduction of the International Normalized Ratio (INR) - and his participation in the demonstration of the preventive effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) against stroke and heart attack .

Awards

The McMaster University will award a Jack Hirsh Award for medically-academic achievements.
