Jack Nicholls

John "Jack" Nicholls (born July 16, 1943 ) is a former bishop of the Church of England . From 1997 to 2008 he was Bishop of Sheffield .

After studying at King's College London and a college in Warminster, he served as a curate at churches in Salford and Manchester , then as vicar and director of pastoral studies at a college in Mirfield . From 1983 to 1990 he was a canon of the Cathedral of Manchester . In 1990 he was suffragan of Lancaster and provided this office until 1997 when he was appointed as the sixth Bishop of Sheffield. He retired on his 65th birthday on July 16, 2008.

On July 4, 2003, he was introduced to the House of Lords as Lord Spiritual (Spiritual Lord).

Nicholls has been married to Judith Dagnall since 1969. The couple have two sons and two daughters.
