Steven John Lindsey Croft (born May 29, 1957 in Halifax , West Yorkshire ) is a British clergyman in the Church of England . He was Bishop of Sheffield from 2009 to 2016 . In April 2016, his appointment as Bishop of Oxford was announced.

education

Steven Croft studied Classical Studies and Theology at Worcester College , Oxford and at the Cranmer Hall Anglican Theological College of the University of Durham until 1980 . In 1984 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic The identity of the individual in the Psalms (dt. = The identity of the individual in the Psalms ).

Priesthood

Croft was in 1983 in the Diocese of London for a deacon ordained , in the following year for priests ordained. From 1983 to 1987 he was an auxiliary chaplain in the ward of St. Andrew in Enfield and then vicar in Ovenden , a ward in the diocese of Wakefield , where he served from 1987 to 1996. Steven Croft was a member of the Church of England Evangelical Council from 1997 to 2000 and chairman of Cranmer Hall from 1996 to 2004 .

In 2004, Croft was hired by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to help set up Fresh expressions . The aim of the initiative is for Christians of all faiths to think about new forms of expression ( fresh expressions ) of the church in their region. These new expressions are defined as "a form of church for our changing culture, specifically intended for people who are not yet members of any church" . In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Cross of St Augustine by the Archbishop of Canterbury .

In July 2008, Steven Croft was proposed to succeed Jack Nicholls in the office of Bishop of Sheffield. The following November he was elected by the Cathedral Chapter of Sheffield Cathedral and was ordained seventh Bishop of Sheffield on May 9, 2009 at Sheffield Cathedral . After taking office, he celebrated three church services in different places in the diocese, so that as many people as possible had the opportunity to get to know the new bishop.

In 2012, Croft was sent to the 13th Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome by Rowan Williams , Bishop of Canterbury, as a representative of the Anglican Church without voting rights  .

In April 2016, his appointment as Bishop of Oxford was announced. He succeeded John Pritchard , who retired in October 2014. On July 6, 2016, his election was officially confirmed at Lambeth Palace , making Croft formally Bishop of Oxford.

Membership in the House of Lords

Croft was officially a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord since July 15, 2013 . On October 14, 2013, with the assistance of Tim Stevens , Bishop of Leicester , and Stephen Platten , Bishop of Wakefield , he was officially introduced to the House of Lords and swore the oath of office at the induction ceremony . Since July 13, 2016 he has been a Bishop of Oxford in the House of Lords.
