Jacob Abraham Theophilos Kalapurakal

Jacob Abraham Theophilos Kalapurakal (also Jacob Mar Theophilos ; born February 21, 1891 in Olasha , Kottayam , India ; † June 27, 1956 ) was an Indian clergyman of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church . He was the first bishop of Tiruvalla .

Life

Jacob (actually Yakob) Kalapurakal was the first son of Abraham Tharakan and his wife Achama, a Christian couple. After primary school he attended in a nearby village, he continued his education at the high school continued in Kottayam. Following the example of his headmaster, who later became Archbishop Geevarghese Panicker , he wanted to become a priest . He was accompanied by Metropolitan Vattasseril Mar Divannasios the deacon ordained and followed his teacher Geevarghese Panicker, as this professor at the University of Serampore was. In 1924, while still in the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church , he was ordained a priest . When in 1926 the Metropolitan of Malankara, Mar Basilios II († 1929), who was in opposition to the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch , and five bishops at the Synod of Parumala, decided to negotiate union with Rome, Geevarghese supported Mar Ivanios Panicker, who had been Syrian since 1925. Jacob Abraham Theophilos Kalapurakal was first appointed titular bishop of Arad on February 13, 1932 . When the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church got its own hierarchy on June 11, 1932, he became the first Syro-Malankara Catholic Bishop of the Tiruvalla Eparchy .

For health reasons, he gave the leadership of the eparchy on July 25, 1950 to his successor Severios Giuseppe Valakuzhyil and was appointed titular bishop of Ammaedara .

He died at the age of 65 and was buried in Tiruvalla Cathedral.
