Jacob Adriaensz. Baker
Jacob Adriaenszoon Backer (* around 1608 in Harlingen ; † August 27, 1651 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch portrait and history painter of the Baroque era .
Jacob Adriaensz. Backer was born the son of a Harling baker. In 1611 the family moved to Amsterdam. In 1627 Backer went to Leeuwarden to work with the history painter Lambert Jacobsz. to learn. In 1633 he went to Amsterdam with Govert Flinck , another student of Jacobson. Flinck entered Rembrandt's studio . It is not certain whether Backer followed suit. In any case, he painted a series of portraits for the Amsterdam orphanage that same year . From then on, Backer became a specialist in portraits and was very popular for his work in Amsterdam. He also painted religious and mythological pictures, especially in his later years. His best-known picture is the portrait of a boy in gray (1632).
