Jacob Montanus

Jakob Montanus (* before 1470 in Gernsbach ; † after 1534 perhaps in Herford ) was a Protestant theologian , humanist and reformer .

Life

Montanus (probably Berg ) came from the Diocese of Speyer and was therefore also called Spirensis or simply Spyr . In 1486 he joined the Herford Fraterherren ( brothers from living together ). It is possible that he then studied in Cologne and became a priest there. Several of his books were printed in Cologne and Deventer , some in Strasbourg (1513). Via Emmerich am Rhein he came to the cathedral school in Münster and was then recommended by Rudolf von Langen as a teacher in Herford . In 1520 he became the head of the "Studentenhof", a school preparing for university studies.

As a humanist, he was highly regarded. His works earned him a lot of recognition. He was in contact with numerous humanists and was friends with Joseph Horlenius and Johannes Murmellius .

Around 1522 he established relationships with the Wittenberg reformers . He must have been to Wittenberg himself and got to know Martin Luther and his family. Luther praised him as the first evangelist in Westphalia . Montanus won the Fraterhaus for the Reformation and was also effective. His last letter is from 1533; soon afterwards he appears to have died.

In addition to sacred poetry, he also wrote school writings. He emphasized that the ancient authors had Latin as their mother tongue, while it is now a foreign language in German countries. This resulted in the use of translations and, in general, greater attention to the vernacular.
