Jacob Rohner

Jacob Rohner (born October 2, 1852 in Rebstein ; † August 15, 1926 there ) was a Swiss entrepreneur, one of the most important embroidery merchants in Eastern Switzerland .

biography

Rohner attended the Catholic primary school in Rebstein, then, at the behest of his father, the secondary school in Altstätten . After an apprenticeship as a cheese maker , Rohner completed a five-week apprenticeship as a sticker in Marbach . In 1873 he founded an embroidery business with hand embroidery machines with his brother Johannes Rohner , and initially worked as a contract embroiderer , later also as a Fergger . In 1877 Rohner married Regina Buschor and had three children. In 1879 he began to export the embroidery and in 1889 founded a trading office in New York . In 1893 he built his own factory with the establishment of Schifflistick factories in Rebstein (1893), Buttikon (1896), Widnau (1897) and Lüchingen (1911–12). In 1911 he converted the company into Jacob Rohner AG . Before the First World War, it was the third largest embroidery company in Eastern Switzerland, with 160 machines and around 3000 employees.

From 1898 to 1921 he was a Catholic-Conservative Cantonal Councilor and provided financial support to Catholic institutions in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley . He was a co-initiator and well-known financier of the Rheintaler tramway .
