Jacob van der Oord , also Latinized Jacobus van der Oord , (born February 11, 1882 in Hoogwoud ; † January 7, 1973 in Purmerend ) was the 14th Old Catholic Bishop of Haarlem from 1945 to 1967 .

Youth and Studies

Jacob van der Oord was the son of the building contractor Pieter van der Oord and his wife Brigitta, née Krul.

In September 1875, after completing his school education in Den Helder , he went to the Old Catholic Seminary in Amersfoort . Then he attended the municipal high school there and graduated from high school, in order to then study philosophy and theology at the seminary.

Priesthood

His ordination took place on May 28, 1908. In the following years he was pastor in Culemborg (1908–1916), in Egmond aan Zee (1916–1926) and Amsterdam (1926–1946), from 1937 also dean of the Diocese of Haarlem . After mandatory celibacy was lifted in 1922, he married Elisabeth Kerkhoff on June 26, 1923. Van der Oord was managing director of the “Adelbertus-Ahuys-Fonds” foundation, the diocesan treasury of the Diocese of Haarlem, for 30 years; He was a member of the Central Finance Committee, a predecessor of the General Church Treasury founded in 1938; became ex officio president of the Old Catholic Department of the Anglican-Old Catholic Willibrord Society, which strengthens and promotes relations between these two church communities ; Member of the board of the Association of Old Catholic Support Funds (1937–1941) and from 1939 to 1945 member of the Episcopal Council.

Episcopate

After the resignation of the Bishop of Haarlem, Henricus Theodorus Johannes van Vlijmen , the Haarlem Electoral College elected him as its successor on September 18, 1945, and he received the episcopal ordination on November 13, 1945 in the cathedral church in Haarlem by the Archbishop of Utrecht , Andreas Rinkel . During his episcopate he had a new church built in Den Helder because the old church building had been destroyed by the German occupiers during the war years. In Alkmaar he founded a new parish and set up a residential building as a church. In IJmuiden he organized the division of the large parish and laid the foundation stone for the new parish church. The cathedral of St. Anna and Maria in Haarlem , which was completed in 1942, he equipped with artistically designed glass windows, wall decorations and a new altar.

On August 27, 1967, at the age of 85, he resigned his episcopate and applied for his retirement on September 1, 1967.
