Opmeer ( listen ? / I ) ( West Frisian Opmar or Obmar ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland ( Dutch Noord-Holland ). Audio file / audio sample

The municipality has 11,766 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) on an area of 41.94 km² (of which about 0.43 km² inland water). It is practically at a height of 0 meters above sea level.

places

Opmeer consists of the villages of Hoogwoud, Spanbroek and Opmeer (where the town hall is located); these three villages have almost grown together into one place.
The small towns of Aartswoud and De Weere , consisting of a long row of farms and houses, also
belong to the municipality of Opmeer.

history

In the Middle Ages , the area was long disputed between the West Frisians and the Count of Holland . On January 28, 1256, the German King and Count of Holland Wilhelm von Holland was on a campaign against the West Frisians, who live in the north of the present province of North Holland . He broke through the ice with his horse at Hoogwoud. The West Frisians found him, did not recognize the king and slew him.

In the 17th century, tiny Aartswoud was an important port for some time, even for seagoing ships.

Location and economy

Most of the community area is still used for agriculture, mainly as pasture for cows.
Most of the residents work in industry and the service sector in neighboring cities and in Amsterdam, about 35 km away .

The municipality is located on the N 241 national road, a good 10 km northwest of the city of Hoorn , near the Wognum motorway exit on the A 7 or E 22, and 14 km northwest of the city of Alkmaar .

The nearest train station is in Obdam , just a few kilometers to the south ; There is also a good bus connection to the city of Hoorn . Schiphol International Airport is a good 40 kilometers south .

Tourism and culture

Although Opmeer (which has two windmills from 1645 and 1650 and a beautiful village church) is only a few kilometers away from the North Sea coast with the well-known seaside resorts of Bergen and Egmond and from the IJsselmeer in the east, the municipality is not yet overcrowded with tourists and is still valid therefore as an "insider tip" for peaceful holidays near the coast.

Opmeer also owned the important Scheringa Museum voor Realisme . This museum was created from the private collection of the businessman Dirk Scheringa (known as the sponsor of the AZ Alkmaar football club and sponsor of speed skating ). It shows paintings from the period between around 1918 and 1960, but also realistically influenced works by modern masters. Especially Carel Willink and other Dutch artists of Magical Realism and New Objectivity are represented. But also works by Gustave van de Woestijne and René Magritte from Belgium , Giorgio de Chirico ( Italy ) as well as Anton Räderscheidt and Georg Schrimpf were part of the collection.
