Jacqueline Ferrand , temporarily Lelong-Ferrand (born February 17, 1918 in Alès , † April 26, 2014 in Sceaux ) was a French mathematician .

Life

In 1947 Ferrand married Pierre Lelong and added her name to Lelong-Ferrand, under which she then published until her divorce in 1977, then again under Ferrand.

Ferrand went to high school in Nîmes and won first prize in the Concours General for the elite universities. She passed the entrance exams at the École normal supérieure and was one of the first women to study there in 1936. In 1939 she received first place in the mathematics test (Agrégation) together with Roger Apéry . She then taught at the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles . In 1942 she received her doctorate under Paul Montel with a thesis on conformal representations (Étude de la représentation conforme au voisinage de la frontière d'un domaine simplement connexe). At that time she was also a student of Arnaud Denjoy . The dissertation received the Prix Girbal-Baral of the Academie des Sciences in 1943. In the same year she was given a charge de cours at the University of Bordeaux .

Ferrand became Professor at Caen University in 1945 and Professor of Analysis and Higher Geometry at Lille University in 1948 . From 1956 until her retirement in 1984 she was a professor in Paris at the Sorbonne.

First, she dealt with conformal representations, then with potential theory, Riemannian manifolds and harmonic forms. She was also known in France for some mathematics textbooks. The Ferrand invariant is named after her.

In 1974 she received the Prix Servant .
