Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval (born June 8, 1851 in La Porcherie , Haute-Vienne , † December 31, 1940 (according to other information: December 13, 1940) was a French physicist.

Life

Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval studied at the Universities of Poitiers , Limoges and Paris . He also studied medicine . Whether he practiced as a doctor is unknown, but he worked as a taxidermist with Claude Bernard and carried out experiments on the physiology of breathing with Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard . He received his doctorate in 1877. In 1894 he was awarded his professorship in Paris .

He mainly worked in the field of electrophysiology and diathermy , his applications of high frequency led to the then term d'Arsonvalization . He is the inventor of the hot wire ammeter (D'Arsonval galvanometer). Together with Paul Marie Oudin , he invented the oudin coil for generating high voltage. He was also involved in the introduction of the telephone in France and worked in the field of thermodynamics. The idea of ​​a marine thermal power station goes back to a proposal by d'Arsonval in 1881. The liquefaction of gases and liquid air explosives was one of his areas of work.

Since 1894 he was a member of the Académie des sciences .

A moon crater is named after him.
