Jacques Gilbert Henri Bergerac (born May 26, 1927 in Biarritz , † June 15, 2014 in Anglet ) was a French actor and businessman.

life and career

Jacques Bergerac was studying law in Paris when he noticed the US actress Ginger Rogers , who was on vacation . They married in February 1953 and the marriage would last until 1957. It was also Rogers who helped her husband to get the first test shoots at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and thus paved his way into the film business. In 1954 he made his film debut alongside Rogers in the crime film Twist of Fate by David Miller . He became known to a wider audience in the US for his major supporting role in George Cukor's musical comedy The Girls from 1957. In the same year he was awarded the prize for the best foreign young actor (New Foreign Star Of The Year - Actor) at the Golden Globe Awards , this category was awarded only once and Bergerac remained its sole winner.

In the following years, Bergerac shuttled between film roles in Europe and the United States, using the cliché of the seductive lover from Europe in most of his Hollywood roles. An example of this is Bergerac's role as the dancer Sandomir in the Oscar-winning musical film Gigi from 1958. In 1960 he had one of his few leading roles as a hypnotist in the B horror flick The 13 Victims of Dr. Desmond . In the course of the 1960s, the film offers for the actor decreased noticeably and he was mostly seen in US television series. In 1969 he retired from acting and became a businessman. He headed the Paris office of the cosmetics company Revlon , while his younger brother Michel (1932-2016) was temporarily president of Ravlon.

After the divorce from Rogers, he married Dorothy Malone, another Oscar winner, in 1959 , with whom he had two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce in 1964. He died in 2014 at the age of 87 in Anglet, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department , not far from his birthplace, Biarratz.
