Jadis is an English progressive rock band. The quartet is classified as Neo-Prog and Symphonic Hardrock .

Band history

The beginnings of Jadis go back to 1980. Guitarist and singer Gary Chandler was around 13, 14 and a schoolboy in Southampton . According to his own statements, he sang occasionally for a fee, wherever it was appropriate, even if it was in a dodgy shed. His own band featured changing line-ups (including the later IQ guitarist Mike Holmes and the later Jadis returnee Nick May) and changing names (Chandler remembers Icarus and Samuran Grass). The playing of Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett impressed Chandler and changed his own in a progressive direction. In the winter of 1981/1982 he looked for new comrades with the same taste and found them in the drummer Mark Ridout and the bassist Trevor Dawkins. A little later guitarist / bassist Les Marshall joined them. In search of a brief new name, Ridout finally suggested Jadis.

Ridout and Marshall switched to the neighboring band IQ in 1985 and 1986 respectively, but were on friendly terms with Jadis, which was expressed in the fact that in 1987 they enabled the band to gain their first stage experience as the opening act for IQ on their Nomzamo tour. Steve Rothery , guitarist from Marillion , then produced their first professional demo recording , which was pressed on vinyl in 1989 , which can be considered the first album, which is why it achieved high collector prices. The line-up at the time consisted of Chandler, Dawkins, Pete Salmon (keyb) and Paul Alwin (dr), whom Mark Law replaced in July 1988. In the same year Jadis accompanied Marillion on the Clutching at Straws tour. In 1989 the time had come for the first headline appearance at the Marquee Club in the music metropolis of London , where the friends of IQ had moved and followed two years later. However, the band broke up in June 1989 and had to be rebuilt. IQ founding member Martin Orford volunteered as a keyboard player in March 1990. In addition, the drummer Steve Christey was hired by Jadis. Former bass player Nick May was resumed, but only until John Jowitt succeeded him in October 1991, who was soon also coveted by IQ and then, like Orford, was a parallel member. With that, the cast for the regular LP premiere was together.

Her first studio album, More Than Meets The Eye , was released in 1992, followed by the EP Once Upon A Time the next year . The second album Across The Water was completed in 1994 and sold 3,000 times in the first few days. The Classic Rock Society (UK) chose the band as the best and the album as the best of the year. After an extensive European tour in 1996, which brought the band to Germany , Spain and Poland , among others , Steve Christey and Martin Orford separated on friendly terms. They were replaced by keyboardist Mike Torr and bassist Steve Hunt. With this new line-up, the third studio album Sommersault and the first live album As Daylight Fades were released in 1997 . Just in time for the recordings of Understand , Steve Christey and Martin Orford returned to the band in 2000, which meant the end for Mike Torr and Steve Hunt. After numerous tours in Mexico , Europe etc., the productions for Fanatic began in 2002 . In 2003 the album was released along with the first DVD called View From Above .

After Jadis had completed the first USA tour in 2004, they worked on guitar-heavy photo play until the beginning of 2006 . In the final phase Orford left the band for the second time, this time due to musical differences, and was replaced by the Italian keyboardist Giuli Risi. Half a year later, Jowitt also went for the second time, for which session musician Andy Marlow was hired. In Holland , the Jadis stronghold on the European mainland, the newcomers gave their live debut on November 25, 2006. The production of a CD successor, which was started at the time, dragged on for six years, which meant that a repeated change of musician, from Giuli Risi to Arman Vardanyan, was inevitable with the usual instability. See Right Through was published in fall 2012.
