Jagannath Mishra

Jagannath Mishra ( Hindi जगन्नाथ मिश्र ; born June 24, 1937 in Bihar , British India ; † August 19, 2019 in Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was three times Chief Minister of Bihar , a member of the Rajya Sabha as well Minister of various departments in the Rao cabinet was.

Life

Jagannath Mishra, son of Rabinandan Mishra, is a brother of Lalit Narayan Mishra , who was India's rail minister between 1973 and 1975 in the Indira Gandhi II cabinet . He himself initially completed an undergraduate degree , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.). A subsequent post-graduate studies of economics he graduated with a Master of Arts from (MA Economics) and also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in the subject Public Finance ( Ph.D. Public Finance). He was professor of economics at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University and also wrote numerous specialist articles and specialist books.

In the late 1960s, he began his political career for the Indian National Congress (INC) and was initially a member of the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) of Bihar , the upper house of the parliament of this state . He was then a member of the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) , the lower house of Bihar, for the first time between 1972 and 1988 . At the same time he became leader of the opposition opposition leader in the legislative assembly. As the successor to Abdul Ghafoor , he became Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time on April 11, 1975 and held this office until April 29, 1977. Thereupon it came first to a presidential administration ( President's rule ) , before Karpoori Thakur from the June 24, 1977 Janata Party became the new Chief Minister. He himself was then again leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly. After a new President's rule , he became Chief Minister of Bihar for the second time on June 8, 1980, formally replacing Ram Sundar Das of the Janata Party , who had held the office until February 16, 1980. He held the post of Chief Minister until August 13, 1983 and was then replaced by his fellow party member Chandra Shekhar Singh .

On April 3, 1988 Mishra became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya saṃsad) , to which he initially belonged until March 16, 1990. On December 6, 1989, he took over from his party colleague Satyendra Narayan Sinha for the third time as Chief Minister of Bihar and held this office until March 9, 1990, whereupon Lalu Prasad Yadav of Janata Dal took his place. He was the last Chief Minister of Bihar to be appointed by the Indian National Congress.

On April 3, 1990, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha again and was a member of the Rajya Sabha for another six years until April 2, 2000. He acted in the Rao cabinet from June 10, 1995 to May 15, 1996 as employment minister and at the same time as minister for rural development and also took over the post of agriculture minister from Balram Jakhar on February 8, which he also held until May 1996 held. He later left the Indian National Congress and then joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and later the Janata Dal (United) (JD (U)).

His marriage to Veena Mishra had three sons and three daughters, including his son Nitish Mishra, who was a minister in the state government of Bihar under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar .
