Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business is a standalone expansion for the Jagged Alliance 2 computer game . It was developed by Sir-Tech Canada and appeared together with a map editor in December 2000 for Windows .

action

Unfinished Business takes the player to Tracona, a neighboring country to the state of Arulco liberated in Jagged Alliance 2 . From there, the Ricci Mining and Exploration Company, which operated the Arulco mines before Deidranna's takeover, wants to recapture their former workplaces with the help of corrupt military personnel. They threaten to fire long-range missiles at Arulco. The aim of the game is to find and destroy the launch site.

Gameplay

Unfinished Business only differs from its predecessor in terms of game technology. With 20 sectors, the play area is ten times smaller than in the main game, which means that fewer secondary tasks have to be fulfilled. The number of attempts at recapture by the computer opponent has also been reduced. Mercenaries are no longer hired on a daily or weekly basis, but are available for the entire game after paying a lump sum. With the help of an import tool, the AIM and MERC mercenaries with the character values achieved in Jagged Alliance 2 can also be transferred to the game. The former staffage can no longer be accessed, instead ten new non-player characters have been integrated into the expansion. The weapon arsenal was expanded to include the Enfield , the Calico M960 and a sniper rifle. Every hired MERC mercenary also receives a sharpened umbrella as standard. A new tactical display provides information on the best cover options and visualizes lines of sight and weapon ranges.

development

While the main game was still on sale through TalonSoft, Unfinished Business was marketed through Interplay Entertainment .

In July 2001, Sir-Tech Canada fired all developers and ceased operations because the revenue generated by the release of Jagged Alliance 2 and Unfinished Business was insufficient. In 2002, Canadian publisher Strategy First acquired the trademark rights to Jagged Alliance and took over most of Sir-Tech's original development team, including series creator Ian Currie. Strategy First first launched a Gold Edition consisting of Jagged Alliance 2 and Unfinished Business and then announced plans for a third part. In addition to bug fixes, the Gold Edition also included a revision of the weapon system and user interface, as well as the new Iron Man difficulty level .

“There are games where time passes faster than others. In my opinion, Jagged Alliance 2 is one of them: First of all, the somewhat dusty look is noticeable, followed by the complex, but also complicated and sometimes cumbersome controls. On the other hand - those who have overcome these hurdles can look forward to long-lasting fun, even if the unfinished business is 'smaller' and a little more linear than the original. "

- Joe Nettelbeck : PC player

“The sheer difficulty makes Unfinished Business hard to recommend for newcomers and makes the game suitable only for players who are very familiar with the series. These players will probably learn to put up with the problems, and will enjoy Unfinished Business if only because it's another new installment in the excellent series. It can be endlessly frustrating, but it also has most of the elements that make the Jagged Alliance series so outstanding. "

“Due to the high level of difficulty, Unfinished Business is not recommended for newcomers and is actually only suitable for players who are already familiar with the series. Even these players will be challenged, but they will like the game simply because it is a new addition to this great franchise. It combines the best of all Jagged Alliance games, but it can also be quite frustrating at times. "

The attached editor created an active modding community that designed new maps or campaigns. One of the resulting projects was later published as the official title Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire and in the USA also included the source code of the game.

Contrary to other announcements, Strategy First never continued the series. Wildfire remained the only release at this time, several other attempts were never completed or appeared, with little response, including titles. In 2010 the trademark rights went to the German publisher bitComposer Games and in 2012 led to the release of the remake Jagged Alliance: Back in Action .
