Jaime Lerner (born December 17, 1937 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian architect , urban planner and politician .

Life

Jaime Lerner comes from a Jewish-Polish immigrant family from Łódź . He was married to Fani Lerner (1932–2009) since 1964.

He graduated in architecture from the Universidade Federal do Paraná . In 1965 he co-founded the Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento Urbano de Curitiba (Institute of Urban Planning and Research of Curitiba, IPPUC for short ), which existed until 2015. As an urban planner, he dealt with sustainable urban development. He developed a master plan for his hometown Curitiba and was involved as a planner in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife, Salvador, Aracaju, Natal, Niterói and others. He has also acted as a consultant on urban issues in Shanghai, San Juan, Caracas, La Habana, Seul and Santiago de los Caballeros. In 1975 he was an advisor on urban affairs to the United Nations. He designed the "Integrated Transportation Network" in Curitiba, which is a model for other cities. Lerner is a professor of urban and regional planning at the Universidade Federal do Paraná , where he also graduated in architecture, and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley .

Jaime Lerner was mayor of Curitiba, the capital of Paraná (1971–1975, 1979–1984 and 1989–1992) and governor of the Brazilian state of Paraná (1994–1998, 1998–2002).

From 2002 to 2005 Lerner was President of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) .

He has received several awards, including the Prince Claus Prize in 2000 .

Controversy

His political work as governor was not always viewed uncritically by the population, so he tried to privatize the energy company Copel and state roads. He was prosecuted by the judiciary for violating road construction tenders. In 2011, he was sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment, which he did not have to serve for reasons of age.

In August 2013, Jaime Lerner was fined before the Paraná Court of Justice for administrative inappropriateness for wrongly paying 40 million reais in compensation for land confiscated in Cascavel .
