Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (born July 8, 1944 in Ocean Springs , Mississippi ) is an American drummer and percussionist . He was best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band .

Life

Johanson drew attention to himself in the mid-1960s in rhythm and blues . In 1966 he was a member of Otis Redding's backing band and then toured as a drummer with Sam & Dave . However , there was no engagement with Curtis Mayfield , for which an offer existed. Johanson was approached as the first musician by Duane Allman to join his new group. The Allman Brothers Band then achieved their commercial breakthrough with At Fillmore East in 1971.

Johanson stayed with the formation until their first breakup in 1976. He then founded the jazz rock group Sea Level with the other two ex-members Chuck Leavell and Lamar Williams and recorded the two studio albums Sea Level and Cats on the Coast before accepting in 1979 involved in the reunion of the Allman Brothers Band. The two recordings reached number 43 and number 31 on the Billboard 200 charts. The name Sea Level is a play on words in English with the name of the singer “C. Leavell ". However, Johanson had to leave the Allman Brothers Band in 1980 due to personal quarrels, before they should split up again a little later. Therefore, the studio album Brothers of the Road from 1981 is the only recording of the group without Johanson.

In the next reformation of the Allman Brothers Band in 1989, the drummer took part again. He has remained a permanent member of the group ever since, despite various changes, particularly in the two guitar positions.

Johanson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as part of the Allman Brothers Band . In 2016, Rolling Stone listed him, together with his bandmate Butch Trucks, at number 71 of the 100 best drummers of all time .

During the break from the formation, Johanson is active in his Jaimoe`s Jasssz Band, with which he recorded Renaissance Man in 2011 .
