John "Jake" Hanna (* 4. April 1931 in Roxbury , Massachusetts; † 12. February 2010 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz - drummer of the swing and mainstream jazz .

Hanna played in local bands in Boston early in his career , studied at Berklee College there and was the house drummer at Storyville in Boston in the 1950s and 1960s . He worked with Toshiko Akiyoshi in 1957 , the following year with Maynard Ferguson , Marian McPartland (1959–61) and in Woody Herman's orchestra from 1962 to 1964. He was also involved as a studio musician in Los Angeles in numerous record sessions, with Oscar Peterson , Bing Crosby , Barney Kessel , Red Norvo , Al Cohn , Buddy Tate, and Rosemary Clooney , with Carl Fontana in the mid-1970s; also worked in the Supersax formation . From the mid-1970s he was a session musician for recordings for the Concord label and played at their annual festivals and all-star tours in Japan and Europe. With the same label he recorded some albums under his own name, on which Carl Fontana, Dave McKenna , Herb Ellis and others play as guest musicians.

Jake Hanna was one of the busiest drummers in mainstream jazz and has participated in many recordings by Concord label artists .
