Jakob Fugger Medal

The Jakob Fugger Medal is a renowned German media award. The award is given at irregular intervals by the Association of Magazine Publishers in Bavaria (VZB) for "outstanding merits and extraordinary achievements that promote the freedom, independence and integrity of the magazine press and raise awareness of the population."

The award is named after the Augsburg merchant Jakob Fugger von der Lilie (1459–1525), who informed business partners about important events with his commercial letters and thus founded a forerunner of the first magazines.

The Jakob Fugger Medal Foundation was established in 1963 for the future award of a prize in memory of the “media pioneer” Jakob Fugger. The award consists of a gold medal with the image of Jakob Fugger and a certificate and is not endowed.

The first prize winner in 1965 was the journalist and publisher Focko Lüpsen . The prize is awarded every four to seven years. In 2012, for the first time, the Jakob Fugger Medal did not go to an individual but to the Hamburg weekly newspaper “ Die Zeit ”.

Board of Trustees

The award winner is selected by the Foundation's Board of Trustees, which includes the President of the Bavarian State Parliament , the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and Art , Count Elisabeth Thun-Fugger as the representative of the Fugger Family Seniorate, and the Chairwoman of the VZB, Waltraut von Mengden , belong.
