Potma's birth and early years have not yet been clarified. In several artists' encyclopedias it is noted that he was born around 1610 in Workum in Friesland . However, this is rather doubtful due to his death date of 1704, as he had been working until the end. At around 96 years of age, this is rather unlikely. Other sources claim that Potma came from Savoy . It could also come from the Potma family of painters of the same name from Markt Schwaben , who moved to Landsberg am Lech in Bavaria in 1671 . It is also possible that he and Henriette Adelheid of Savoy moved from Italy to the Munich court in 1665 at the latest.

From 1668 he can be traced in Munich. From April 1668 he can be found on the invoices of Duke Maximilian Philipp with the titles court painter , later court painter and valet . Most recently he is noted as Purck nurse and court painter. He received a fixed remuneration from the Bavarian elector for these activities , initially 280 pounds annually, later 400 pounds and from 1702 "with his boy" 488 pounds quarterly. In addition, he received travel expenses, food and art supplies .

The painter last appeared in the invoices in the second quarter of 1704. The Bavarian historian Lorenz von Westenrieder noted the death of Potma: "1704 June 27th .... Mr. Jacob Bottmair used camper servant and painter by Duke Maximilian Philipp was buried here in St. Apolonia Capellen". The Apolonia Chapel is located in the Munich Bishop 's Cathedral to Our Lady .
