Jakob Schrenck von Notzing (born June 12, 1539 - † October 16, 1612 in Innsbruck ) was a Bavarian nobleman and historian in the Austrian service.

Life

He came from the old Bavarian noble family Schrenck von Notzing and was the son of the ducal caretaker of Eggmühl and former provision master Emperor Karl V , Bartlmä (Bartholomäus) Schrenck von Notzing (1508–1576). His younger brother, Oktavian August Schrenck von Notzing (1547–1592), served as Chancellor of the dioceses of Regensburg and Würzburg and as canon in Freising .

Jakob Schrenck von Notzing entered the service of Duke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529–1595) in 1565 . He became his councilor , secret secretary and valet , as well as the secretary of his wife Philippine Welser (1527-1580), who was his cousin.

At his residence at Schloss Ambras , the duke put on an extensive historical collection that still exists today; including a collection of armor from famous men of the 15th and 16th centuries. He commissioned his secretary and historical colleague Jakob Schrenck von Notzing to create a picture inventory of this so-called “hero armory” in order to publish a book about it. The Augsburg copperplate engraver Dominicus Custos made the illustrations based on designs by Giovanni Battista Fontana . Before the work could be completed, Duke Ferdinand II died in 1595.

Jakob Schrenck von Notzing continued the work and published the book “Armamentarium Heroicum” (in German: “Der Aller Durchleuchtigisten und Großmächtigen Kayser, Fürsten, Graf, Herren, Bildtnussen” and brief descriptions of the nobility in a Latin and 1603 in a German edition Deeds and actions: their weapons and armor partly wholly, partly stucco-white from almost all countries of the world, partly brought together with great effort and expense ” ). Schrenck von Notzing also wrote the life descriptions of the personalities depicted therein. The work was reissued in Nuremberg in 1735 under the title “Ambraßische Heldenkammer” , but with reduced images.

Jacob Schrenck von Notzing died in 1612 at Ambras Castle in Tyrol. His “Armamentarium Heroicum” is considered to be the world's first printed and illustrated museum catalog.
